Put simply, CRO about increasing your return on investment. It is the practice of increasing whatever it is that brings you business - whether it is sales, leads, downloads, or something else. It is much more cost effective to convert a higher percentage of your existing visitors than it is to attract new ones.
There are many elements which can increase ROI in this way, and CRO is based on hard facts - using analytics and user feedback to improve performance. This is about giving users what they want, even if they don't know it, and at the same time making you more money.
